Select group of 8 Chinese occupational scenes, including a "celestial cab," a demonstration on a cotton rolling machine, an itinerant cook, and young women posed with dominos; includes two oval prints and one vignetted image. Hand-colored albumen prints, from 6x8 1/4 to 8 1/4x10 1/2 inches (15.2x21 to 21x26.7 cm.) and the reverse, on the original mounts, 5 with letterpress labels and 3 with period captions, in ink, on recto. 1865-1875

  • Notes: Saunders, who had a keen eye for exotic detail, opened one of Shanghai's first photography studios in 1862.
