SAXOLEINE. 1891.

33x23 3/4 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: minor tears and creases in margins.
An orange haired woman in a yellow dress is turning on a lamp with a red shade, against a dark blue background. One in the long series of posters that Cheret designed between 1891 and 1900 for a lamp oil company. The series, twenty posters in all, can conceivably be considered as the first modern advertising campaign. Year after year Cheret helped build the company's image, ensuring immediate recognition, by using the same concept of a woman holding a lamp. Broido 941.
