SCARCE CATALOGUE (CORTONA.)

Museum Cortonense in quo Vetera Monumenta complectuntur. Historiated initials, head- and tailpieces, and 85 engraved plates. Folio, contemporary calf gilt, scuffs, joints starting. Rome: sumptibus Fausti Amidei, 1750 first edition. The first catalogue of the bronzes, bas-reliefs and engraved gems from the collection of the Etruscan Academy at Cortona, edited by Valesio, Gori and Venuti. The Academy was founded by Venuti in 1726 and attracted such notable figures as Winckelmann, Montesquieu and Voltaire to Cortona. The plates depict excavation scenes, bronzes, statuettes, bas-reliefs and engraved gems, most belonging to the Roman imperial period. Cicognara 3418; Sinkankas 6791.
