SCARCE FIRST ISSUE OF FIRST WORK LAWRENCE, D. H. The White Peacock. 8vo, publisher's pictorial blue cloth, cocked, unevenly darkened, most of white

SCARCE FIRST ISSUE OF FIRST WORK LAWRENCE, D. H. The White Peacock. 8vo, publisher's pictorial blue cloth, cocked, unevenly darkened, most of white stamping rubbed away, two dime-sized soil marks on cover, extremities rubbed with some loss of cloth; staining to fore and bottom edges occasionally creeping into margins; internally sound; contemporary owner's ink inscription on front endpaper. New York: Duffield & Company, 1910 [i.e. 1911]

  • Notes: scarce true first issue of lawrence's first novel with integral title-page reading "copyright 1910" on page [vi]. Published one day before the English edition. When the latter was printed, its publisher Heinemann imported the Duffield plates and, after a few were bound, Lawrence was asked to rewrite potentially offensive passages on pages 227 and 230. A cancel title reading 1911 was inserted into those remaining copies. The number of copies for this 1910 Duffield edition is very limited but remains unknown. Only seven institutional copies are recorded.
Lawrence wrote The White Peacock over the course of several years. The final version was completed in early 1910 but was not published until the month after his mother's death. To please her, he was able to obtain an advance copy of the Heinemann edition and place it in her hands before she died. Roberts A1a (see note).
