(SCIENCE & ENGINEERING.) Franklin Peale. Bound volume of his manuscript scientific lectures. [220], [74], [24] manuscript pages. 8vo, later 1/2 morocco with gilt cover label "Original Sketches of Lectures by Franklin Peale," moderate wear; minimal wear to contents; edges of first section tinted yellow. [Philadelphia], 1831-1833

  • Notes: Franklin Peale (1795-1870) was the son of noted Philadelphia painter Charles Willson Peale. He helped manage his father's noted museum of curiosities. In 1824 he was a founder of the city's Franklin Institute, which offered technical lectures to the city's tradesmen. Peale is most remembered for his long tenure as a leader of the United States Mint at Philadelphia.

Offered here are several of Peale's lectures given at the Franklin Institute, shortly before he began his work at the Mint. They are divided into three sections, each with their own manuscript title page. The first is a series of six lectures concluding with a recapitulation. It starts with a title page, "1st Lecture: Matter, Motion, Forces; Machines, States, Derivatives; Simple Machines, Levers; 1st, 2d, 3d Orders; Weighing, Measuring," dated 10 December 1831. This section has numerous small illustrations. Bound in is a short note addressed to Professor Peale regarding the mechanics of wheels.

Second is "Original notes of lectures on Steam Engines & Rail-Roads." This section is well illustrated, including a nice color illustration of the theorem "Water may be raised by fire higher than its level."

In the rear is "Original Notes of a Lecture on Automata," 9 February 1833.
