  • Notes: first edition. With pencil note at beginning of Chapter XIX (Canals in Dark Regions) on page 243: "Discovered by A[ndrew] E[llicott] D[ouglass] in 1894--no mention here of discoverer." Douglass was an astronomer closely associated with the Lowell Observatory from its founding until his dismissal in 1901 for rejecting Lowell''s Martian theories.
