(SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY.) John A. Roebling. Manufacture of Patent Wire Rope.

(SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY.) John A. Roebling. Manufacture of Patent Wire Rope. 3 pages, 10¼ x 8 inches, on one folding sheet; minor dampstaining and wear. Trenton, NJ, circa 1855

  • Notes: The civil engineer John A. Roebling (1806-1869) began producing wire rope for sale before he became known as one of the most prominent bridge builders in America. The rope became a central component of bridge-building advances during this period. This brochure is illustrated with an engraving of one of his most prominent creations, the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge. Roebling later died from injuries suffered while surveying the Brooklyn Bridge site; the project was completed under the supervision of his son and, famously, his daughter-in-law Emily Warren Roebling. We trace no other examples of this piece in OCLC, although Rutgers University holds one as part of its Roebling Papers.
