ON ALBERT EINSTEIN'S GIRLFRIENDS: "INSIDE, HE IS A RESTLESS FELLOW" (SCIENTISTS.) EINSTEIN, ELSA. Autograph Letter Signed, "Ihre Elsa," to the wife of Berlin physician Gustav P. Bucky, in German, dismissing the discovery that a young woman is harboring a romantic interest in Albert, and reflecting upon Albert's past relations with women. Dateline typed at upper center. 2 pages, 4to, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; minor soiling at folds. Np, 5 March 1935

  • Notes: "My goodness! Little C. is not worth getting so upset about. She wants with every fiber of her ardent soul, she has wanted for years. But it won't lead to any tragedy. My husband is a 12th grader in this regard, no older than a 12th grader! and he'll still be that young even when he is eighty years old! I know he's like that and have never known him to be any different. All his friends were aware of this weakness and have protected him often enough, and when things went too far, they bailed him out. C. is a pitiful thing compared with the sneaky canailles that have wanted to enter his life. She came here from California because she wanted him. She isn't a bad person. But she has now set her mind on getting him. Every one of these women wanted to go down in 'history' and be the woman in his life. Time and again! . . . If you knew how sorely I miss my Ilschen [Little Ilse, her daughter who died in 1934], then you would understand why I no longer take such things as hard as I used to. He [Albert] is bohemian by nature, wandering in every respect. The tranquility that he parades is only superficial. Inside, he is a restless fellow. Those who know him well know this. So let us keep a watchful eye on little C., so that she doesn't go totally crazy; she's halfway there already."
