Seaverns Hilton was a designer from Maine who worked in New York and Boston. He was also known for investing in the run-down New England town of Weld, Maine and putting the local craftsmen to work to rebuild and reinvigorate the area. He produced American Folk Art figures out of wood, featuring "native characters and animals," according to an article in Popular Science Monthly, June 1939. He also filed a design patent in 1932 for a cartoon dog-shaped display stand with the Interwoven Stocking Company of New Brunswick, NJ. Hilton also pursued illustration art, and created several posters for the Northen Pacific Railroad. Though designed much earlier than his Weld, Maine project, this poster reflects Hilton's interest in American Historical characters and even recalls the structure and simple lines of woodwork. Rare we could find no other copies at auction.
