SENDAK WINS A CLIO SENDAK, MAURICE. 5-panel storyboard for Bell Atlantic television commercial. Each image roughly 55x80 mm drawn in graphite on an 8 1/2x11-inch sheet; top two images numbered 40 and 43. Signed by Sendak, lower right. [Np, 1998]

  • Notes: In 1998, Sendak created a television commercial for Bell Atlantic based upon his classic book "Where the Wild Things Are." Just as young Max wandered through the jungle, the idea of the ad was to safely guide customers through the figurative jungle of communications choices. The ads ran for several years, until Bell Atlantic changed its name to Verizon. In a 2000 interview at New York's F.A.O. Schwartz, Sendak said of the campaign that he worked intensely with the animators. He "tore up a number of character sheets and storyboards until they get them right. I drew with them, eventually doing all the storyboards myself. I think the reason why those commercials.. . work so well is because I was there." The extremely successful campaign won Sendak a Clio award.
