SEPO (SEVERO POZZATI, 1895-1983) WEEK - END / CIGARETTES GOÛT ANGLAIS. 1936.
57x38 inches, 144 3/4x96 1/2 cm. Idéa, Seine.
Condition B / B+: repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Having studied in Bologna, Sepo began his artistic career working for the publisher Maga in his native Italy. He moved to France in 1920 and was hired by Vercasson, Maga''s sister company in Paris and Cappiello''s printer. Ultimately, he moved on to the French office of the Dorland Advertising Agency, where he worked with their major clients while also regularly receiving commissions from Italy. SEITA, the French tobacco company, launched Week-End cigarettes, made from "luxury Virginia tobacco" to compete with similar British brands. As the concept of a weekend is a time for relaxing and getting away, Sepo has the clever idea to literally illustrate the brand as a path to escape. Sepo 214, Reclame p. 56, Seita p. 47.
