"I FEAR GREAT EVILS IF YOU CANNOT BRING YOUR JUDGMENT TO ACCORD WITH US" SEWARD, WILLIAM HENRY. Two items: Autograph Letter; and a Letter, each Signed, "William H. Seward," to Zachary Taylor, soliciting an appointment for James Watson Webb. The first, "Sir," pleading. The second, "My Dear General," threatening. Together 4 1/4 pages, 4to, each written on a single folded sheet, pale blue paper; short separations and toning at folds, remnants of mounting at corners of terminal page, faint scattered dampstaining on later letter, docketing on terminal page of each letter with one possibly in Taylor's hand. Washington, 12 December 1848; New York, 10 November 1849

  • Notes: 12 December 1848: ". . . I am fully and clearly of opinion that his talents, his character, and his services, do entirely justify his application for the very honorable mission he indicates, or even for a higher one.
". . . Through the whole of the history of the Whig Party I have been in relations of intercourse and friendship with Col. Webb, and my conviction of his unrewarded services is such as to induce this departure from the absolute non-interference which it is my intention to practice in regard to the duties . . . of Patronage."
10 November 1849: ". . . I feel satisfied that the justice of his appointment to Russia or Berlin would win for it the acquiescence, approbation and thanks of the whole Whig party. . . . I fear great evils if you cannot bring your judgment to accord with us in this matter. . . ."
