SHEILA METZNER (1939- ) Untitled, from the series One of a Kind.

SHEILA METZNER (1939- )
Untitled, from the series One of a Kind. Fresson print, the image measuring 16½x10 7/8 inches (42x27.6 cm.), the sheet 21½x15¾ inches (54.6x40 cm.), with Metzner's initials in pencil and her Fresson Print blind stamp on recto, and her signature, title, date, and the notation "one of a kind" in pencil on verso. 1986

  • Condition: This lovely unique Fresson print of a still life by Metzner is in overall in excellent condition. The hues and tones of greens, yellows and reds are subdued and subtle. There is one very small spot of retouching at the lower left quadrant of the image area (in the vase), but this is artfully done and is visible mostly in strong raking light and is not obtrusive.

The wide, creamy margins of the sheet and the verso are clean with a wove, soft texture.

Overall, a striking, large portrait in an uncommon medium.

    Notes on the printing technique:
The Fresson print was invented in 1900 in France. This method of color printing produces an image that is characteristically diffused and subtle, reminiscent of pointillism Impressionist paintings with rich and deep tones. This process is extremely time-consuming, requiring from four to seven separate transparencies. Color pigments are used, and the print is developed in as solution of water and sawdust to give it the characteristic effects.
