SHEP (CHARLES SHEPHERD, 1892-?)

THE GOLDEN ARROW PULLMAN. 1931.

40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm. The Baynard Press, London.
Condition A- / A: minor repaired tears and restoration at edges; minor creases along horizontal folds; "Printed in England" ink stamp in bottom margin.

Charles Shepherd, known as Shep, studied art under Paul Woodroofe and was later head of the studio at the Baynard Press. He designed posters for the Southern Railway, British Rail and the Royal Mail Packet Steamship Company. The Golden Arrow was a luxury rail service provided by the Southern Railway initiated in 1929. This train "consisted solely of ten first-class Pullman cars that ran from London to Dover in just an hour and a half" (Crouse, p. 265). This route also allowed easier access via transfer to connect with the French "Fleche d'Or" to Paris. This bold image, graphically conveying the speed of this train route, was also printed with a black background. Crouse p. 264, Posters & Publicity 1929, p. 51 (var), Favre p. 92 (var), Wagons Lits 182 (var).
