  • Notes: This painting served as a maquette for a poster used in Henry Wallace's 1948 presidential bid [cover lot in Swann Galleries' sale 1961 27 February 2003].
    Shimin (1902-1984) was born in Astrakhan and came to the U.S. in 1912. He apprenticed to a commercial artist at 16 and studied at Cooper Union. Best known as the illustrator of more than a dozen titles by various writers. Black children are a recurrent theme in his work.
