16-YEAR-OLD COMPOSER FALLS IN LOVE SHOSTAKOVICH, DMITRI. Autograph Letter Signed, "D.Shostakovich," to composer and friend Valerian Mikhailovich Bogdanov-Berezovsky ("Valerian Mikhailovich"), in Russian, in purple ink, praising conductor [Vladimir?] Dranishnikov, remarking that he has fallen in love with Tanya Gilvenko, describing the walks he takes with her in the evenings, expressing his anxiety that she will be leaving for Moscow. 2 pages, 4to, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; moderate dampstaining at all edges, short closed separations at folds. [Crimea], 25 August 1923

  • Notes: ". . . [Y]ou heard Tchaikovsky's 6th conducted by Dranishnikov. V.A. always appealed to me as a conductor and I consider him to be very talented. I am glad you like the 1st Symphony by Kamennikov. It's a wonderfully refreshing and talented piece. . . . Tell me, why do bastards like Kukish exist in my world? . . . I once expounded to you my view on marriage and love . . . . I would have moped here altogether if it were not for the presence of one girl. . . . [T]he most beautiful girl I have ever met. Her name is Tatyana Ivanova Gilvenko. . . . I am very much in love with her. . . . But, alas! Soon she is leaving . . . . I don't know how I am going to live without her. . . . Quadri is composing a quartet . . . . I like his quartet more than I do Tjulin's music . . . . I am going to play and think about you playing along somewhere far away."
In the summer of 1923, Shostakovich was recovering from tuberculosis in a sanitarium in Crimea. During his convalescence, he composed First Piano Trio (op. 8) and First Piano Sonata (op. 12).
