SIGISMONDO CAULA (ATTRIBUTED TO)

(Modena 1637-1724 Modena)
A Pair of Grotesques in Profile, Bust-Length.

Both brush and red ink and wash on cream laid paper. Both approximately 150x120 mm; 6x4 3/4 inches.

Both drawings are based on earlier examples by Leonardo da Vinci (see Bambach, editor, Leonardo da Vinci, Master Draughtsman, New York, 2003, number 71). The drawing of the male grotesque is known in several 17th-century copies, notably in the Spencer Collection, New York Public Library, and the Louvre, Paris. Leonardo's drawing of the female grotesque is not known, nor are any other 17th-century copies aside from the current work.
