  • Notes: the only example of both signatures on the same item that we could locate.
Both signatures appear to be with the same pen and were likely obtained at an event where the two appeared together. Lindbergh and Earhart's association is well known: George Putnam published Lindbergh's We and then discovered (and married) Earhart; Ann Morrow Lindbergh and Earhart corresponded regarding a Cosmopolitan magazine article; Charles Lindbergh sent Earhart congratulatory telegrams after each of her flights. However, the two pioneer aviators were rarely together in the same place. Indeed, there were only a handful of such instances -- including the 1929 inauguration of Transcontinental & Western Air, the 1930 inauguration of Transcontinental Western Air Express Airmail, a 1931 dinner given to honor James Kimball and a 1933 ceremony where they both received medals of honor from King Carol of Rumania. The Kimball dinner is particularly intriguing in this context, as the ballroom was decorated with American flags. The infrequency of their meeting makes this signed flag a remarkable rarity.
