  • Notes: first edition, first binding. boldly signed by tolkien in thick black ink on front pastedown. Originally intended as a preface to a new edition of The Golden Key by George MacDonald by means of a story about the definition of "Fairy," the tale grew into its own separate work. Wootton was first accepted for Redbook magazine but Tolkien's U.K. publisher Unwin, who at first hesitated to publish such a short work, anticipated the interest from American audiences and decided to produce it as a Christmas gift book.
