Simon Vouet Two Angels and Cherubs Supporting the Crucifix. Pen and brown ink and gray wash on cream laid paper. 290 x 196mm; 11.5 x 7.75inches (oval). Ex-collection George Usslaub (Lugt 1221, verso), Pascalis (Lugt supplement 2707, lower center recto) and an unidentified collector, inscription in ink verso. Though most of Vouets oeuvre consists of drawings in chalk, Thuillier discusses several works made as designs for engravings and drawn in pen an ink and wash, similar to the present work. One of which, Etude pour l'Allegorie de l'Histoire de ]a Maison de Savoie, was reproduced as an engraving by Claude Mellan (see Thuillier, Vouet, Paris, 1990, pp. 360-62, no. 66
