Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951)

Arrowsmith. Signed Limited Edition.

New York: Harcourt, Brace, and Company, 1925.
First edition, limited issue, octavo; number 3 of 500 copies hand-numbered and signed by the author on the limitation; title printed in red and black; bound in cream cloth-backed blue boards, printed spine label, top edge gilt, others uncut, with an extra label inserted at rear (occasional pale thumbmarks and tiny stains; spine label toned, chipped at corners, and reinforced with tape, small stains, lightly soiled, extremities bumped, corners just exposed, over-opened in a few places); 8 7/8 x 5 7/8 in.

Lewis was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Arrowsmith in 1926, which he famously refused, writing to the committee that their mission statement suggests that "the appraisal of the novels shall be made not according to their actual literary merit but in obedience to whatever code of Good Form may chance to be popular at the moment."
