Sintenis, Renée (1888-1965)
Esel.

1923.

Bronze with brown patina on stone plinth; with artist's stamped monogram on the right hind hoof and unidentified foundry mark beneath; 128 x 105 mm; 5 x 4 in. excluding base.
Buhlmann 191.

Provenance
Private collection, Germany.
Thence by descent to current owner, Florida.

Sintenis was known for her delicate bronze renderings of animals, as seen in this charming piece. Her family had hoped she would become a secretary, but she persisted in her chosen career as an artist. From 1908 to 1912, she attended the Berliner Kunstgewerbeschule. Post graduation, she exhibited with the Berlin Secessionists, a young group of revolutionary artists who rebelled against conservatism. Devoted to her own ideas and expression, Sintenis eschewed commissions and was named a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime. Despite challenges in the 1930s, she continued to enjoy success. Her work continues to garner interest today.
