First edition; royal octavo, illustrated by Sidney Paget; with the error "Miss Violent Hunter" on last leaf of text; half-title present; signed by Conan Doyle on title page; inscription of a former owner on front fly leaf, "The product of one great mystery writer to another, with the hope that the works of the latter may exceed the former. 2/17/'39, J.K.H."; the writer may have been the Reverend James King Hewison (1853-1941), a contemporary of Doyle also born in Scotland in the 1850s who attended the University of Edinburgh at about the same time; further, both men were Free Masons and Conan Doyle was made an honorary member of Hewison's lodge in Edinburgh at the time that Hewison was Grand Chaplain of the Scottish Masons; bound in full modern red morocco by Green Dragon Bindery, in a matching half-morocco folding case; 9 x 6 1/8 in.
