Partly-printed-and-handwritten of ficial gov ernment registration of slave "Gabriel, property of captain Estrella, single, laborer, son of Eusebia" on the island of Puerto Rico in 1872 6 x 8.5 inches; top of document with elaborate lettering partly trimmed, but quite legible; sev-eral official stamps; some slight worming, not affecting text. Puerto Rico, 1872 E300/400 Unusual slave document. Age, height, color, hair, beard, eyes, nose and mouth are filled in. Slavery in the West Indies was abolished in 1834, but continued in Cuba and Puerto Rico until 1873. About a third of both islands were slaves.
