Slave Emancipation: Crown Slaves.

16 pages. Folio, self-wrappers, stitched. House of Commons document. London, 1831

  • Notes: This preliminary act set in motion the eventual emancipation of all of the slaves of the West Indies (1834). In this document those slaves owned by the government are emancipated. The Crown realized that it must set an example if it was going to ask private slaveholders to give up their slaves. This document contains the suggestions of numerous colonial governors on how complete emancipation might be attained.
