(SLAVE NARRATIVE.) Brown, William Wells. The Narrative of William Wells Brown, an American Slave. Written by Himself. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 3 plates. 8vo, original cloth. Exceptional copy. London: Gilpin, 1849

  • Notes: stated "eleventh thousand," it is, however, the first english edition of the author's first book. Expanded from the American edition by 45 pages with the addition of three full-page engravings. The explanation might be that the first American edition (1847) consisted of eight thousand copies. The second (1850) in all probability consisted of three. Thus the "Eleventh Thousand" for the London edition is logical. Work p. 311 ( first U.S.); Sabin 8954 (first U.S.).
Brown is the author of "Clotel, or the President's Daughter," (1853) the first novel by an African-American, as well as "The Escape" (1858), the first play written by an African-American. In addition to these two "firsts," Brown was an historian and a relentless fighter for abolition and subsequent civil rights.
