SLAVE NARRATIVE
Roper, Moses. A Narrative of the Adventures and Escape of Moses Roper from American Slavery. 16mo, original cloth with title within a gilt border on the front cover, neatly rebacked; initial two pages of text supplied in facsimile (from the British Museum copy). London, 1837 FIRST EDITION. Roper was born in slavery in North Carolina and was sold or exchanged many times. After repeated attempts at escape and numerous horrendous floggings and torture, he succeeded in making his way to Savannah where he received employment on a ship under false pretenses and sailed for New York, eventually making his way to England. Highly prized for its authenticity, this narrative is valuable as a research tool regarding the slaveholders of the Carolinas. Brignano 453 (1838 American edition); Blockson Collection 9735 (5th London edition).
