  • Notes: second edition, the same year as the first. John Brown (1810-1876) was born into slavery in Virginia. Originally given the single name 'Fed,' Brown spent his earliest years on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, until he was separated from his mother at the age of ten and sent to work on a farm in Georgia. After at least one failed attempt, Fed escaped but was caught in New Orleans and sold again to a Mississippi planter. From there he escaped yet again and made his way north to Michigan and then to Canada, and finally to England, where he settled.
