(SLAVERY & ABOLITION.) Injured Humanity . . . What the Unhappy Children of Africa Endure From Those Who Call Themselves Christians.

(SLAVERY & ABOLITION.) Injured Humanity . . . What the Unhappy Children of Africa Endure From Those Who Call Themselves Christians. Letterpress broadside, 16 3/4 x 13 1/4 inches, illustrated with wood engravings; full separation along horizontal fold, light toning, moderate edge wear, 2 small chips affecting text, small puncture in right border, minor dampstaining. [New York]: Samuel Wood, circa 1805-08

  • Notes: A catalogue of the horrors of West Indian slavery, with vignettes of various restraints and punishments. The main text is mostly adapted from an 1804 work by Thomas Branagan in support of an abolitionist boycott of West Indian goods, which in turn relied on abstracts from parliamentary testimony. The illustrations are generally credited to pioneering New York wood engraver Alexander Anderson. Princeton University places the publication date between 1805 and 1808 based on the printer's address.
