Rules and Regulations of the Society for the Education of the Coloured Poor in the Principles of the Established Church, and for other Charitable Relief. Under the Patronage of His Excellency the Governor. 8 pages, newly stitched. Bridge-town: Barbadian Office, 1826

  • Notes: first edition. Established by members of the free colored community as an outgrowth and consolidation of three earlier free colored charitable organizations. Not in Handler, or Handler Supplement, but see page 37 of the latter for a long description of the organization and its first annual report of 1827. The stated mission of the Society was the "Religious education of the coloured poor, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, and giving Christian interment to the deceased." With the Church Missionary Society in London, the Society operated the Colonial Charity School in Bridgetown for free colored and slave boys and girls, the first such institution of its kind in the West Indies. Listed are the names of twenty-nine free colored men, the leading members of the free colored community. Not recorded in any of the standard references.
