  • Notes: an exceedingly rare run of this newspaper, printed in liberia by W. P. Jayne and edited by Methodist Episcopal minister John Seys. Africa's Luminary was the first foreign publication of the M.E. Church, and recorded the progress of Africa's first republic, founded by ex-slaves from the United States. The commonwealth of Liberia, with 3000 inhabitants was founded in 1838, and Volume I, number 1 for March 15th, 1839 prints its Constitution, based on that of the United States. Articles concern the work of the Church as well as foreign and domestic news. Afro-Americana Catalogue records 5 issues at the Library Company of Pennsylvania from the first volume, in 1839. OCLC cites five other locations with scattered holdings.
