(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--MOUNT VERNON.) FORD, WEST. Autograph Letter Signed to George Washington''s grandnephew John Augustine Washington. Single folio leaf, folded to form four pages, written on two sides with integral address and sealing wax seal on the reverse. Np, August 12, 1842

  • Notes: another fine letter from west ford to his old master john augustine washington, discussing conditions at mount vernon. ''There has been so much rain that I have not been able to get out not one floor of wheat. Mr. Church, our smith called on me for small might of money which I paid him. Captain William Romney has delivered to me 60085 [sic] bushels of shells which I paid him for. I let him have 12 cords of wood and some watermelons in pay. I am sorry to bee the reporter of bad news as I set Gabriel to hauling down wood for Mr. Aughter back the day you left here. He got the leg of the [??] mule broken. It mortified and she died directly. I was myself poorly when you left here and was quite sick for a week after but did not lay by. There has been no sickness among the hands except Thom laid by a little while with a snag on his leg. Phil has had his attack, same as usual. I am striving to carry on the work at Mt Vernon to your satisfaction. Everything seems quite moderate. Please remember me to the family. The servants desire to be remembered to you all. Your humble servant West Ford.''
