(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION---MOUNT VERNON.) WASHINGTON, JOHN AUGUSTINE. Group of 16 letters from various individuals connected or related to Mount Vernon and or John Augustine Washington. 4to, 8vo, and small folio, condition generally very good, should be seen. Virginia, 1850''s

  • Notes: sixteen letters, all related to mount vernon and all with slave related subject matter.Includes a letter from John Lloyd addressed to ''Sis'': ''Eliza thinks she would like to have Susan for the next year and will take her on the terms mentioned in your note of today. Susan does not seem very anxious to go home, but I suppose it is connected with her love affair with Beverly. I think the separation and the new society may [?] her in that respect and as I don''t intend to keep her next year, I reckon she will entirely recover.'' Then there is this receipt for the hire of a slave of John Washington: ''Whereas I have this day hired a negro girl named Martha Ann from John A. Washington of Fairfax County Virginia (who is the owner of the said negro), for a term of five years from the twenty-fourth day of May, eighteen fifty eight to the twenty-third day of May eighteen hundred and sixty three. . . '' Another one to John A. Washington: ''Dear Sir: Enclosed please find a statement of the balance I claim of the hires of four negroes, which I hired to you last fishing season. The statement is made from a statement given me by your clerk in May last.'' And this one, ''Dear Sir: Quite to my surprise I have ascertained within a few days past that the girl Jinny that I hired of you is pregnant, and very far advanced in that state. Last night gave evident symptoms of labor, I sent for Doctor Clagett. . . He thinks she may be confined soon.''
