(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--MOUNT VERNON.) Single folio leaf, folded to form four pages, written on one side, folded and addressed on the reverse for mailing Arlington: August 27, 1844

  • Notes: a slave dealer''s letter, respecting an inquiry to an advertisement for a blacksmith: ''Dear Sir: Yours of the 19th is before me. One of the black smiths is 44 years of age, his is normally hired out at $13 dollars per month or $150 per year. He is I believe a good workman, he has a family. The other B smith is 30 years old, has a wife but no children. He can shoe horses and do other work necessary on a farm. They might be bought together for about $500 each for the terms mentioned in my advertisement. All the other men have wives I believe except one or two--- [ ? ] of them are about 38 or 40 years old. There is one man about 27 he has a wife.'' The matter of fact language utilized in the commerce of human beings is truly chilling—what the noted political theorist Hannah Arendt referred to as the ''banality of evil.''
