Notes: Samuel Nickless was the Treasurer of William Still''s Philadelphia Vigilance Committee, a part of the Underground Railroad organized to aid escaped slaves. Nickless writes asking an unnamed lecturer to come and speak: "The members of the Second African Presbyterian Church take the liberty of asking you to give us a lecture, showing what we can do toward hastening the emancipation of the slave. At which time we wish to take up a collection to assist the fugitive . . . Samuel Nickless on behalf of the Church and Congregation." Beneath this "Please leave an answer at the Liberty Office."
