Notes: John Roy Lynch (1847-1939), representative, Speaker of the House from Mississippi, and U.S. Congressman was the son of Patrick Lynch, an Irish immigrant and Catherine White, a slave from Louisiana. Patrick Lynch purchased his wife and child and moved to Mississippi. Following emancipation, the young Lynch studied photography and attended school at night. He soon became manager of a thriving business and became active in the local Republican Party. A natural and brilliant politician, Lynch was appointed by liberal governor Ames as Justice of the Peace in 1869. He became a member of the State house of representatives, 1869-1873 and served the last term as speaker; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872; 1884; 1888, 1892 and 1900; elected as Republican to the 43rd and 44th Congresses (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1877), and served again in 1882. He served as a major in the Spanish-American War and was appointed paymaster with a rank of captain by William McKinley.
