(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--RECONSTRUCTION.) BRAYTON, ELLERY M. An Address upon the Election Law of South Carolina and the Methods Employed to Suppress the Republican Vote, by Ellery M. Brayton, Chair, Republican State Ex. Com. 24 pages. Tall 8vo, original printed self-wrappers; paper lightly and evenly toned. Columbia, S.C.: Wm. Sloane, Book and Job Printer, 1889

  • Notes: Following reconstruction, the Southern Democrats were able to regain much of their former power. In 1888 the Republican Party of South Carolina had suffered yet another defeat. African-American politician Ellery M. Brayton accuses the Democratic Party of gross violations of the rights of black voters. Among other things the Democrats were not only requiring a poll tax, but made it a criminal offense to not pay it. Scarce. OCLC locates only 5 copies.
