(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--RECONSTRUCTION.) CARDOZO, FRANCIS LOUIS. Autograph Letter Signed regarding the sale or rental of his house. 4to, folded to form four pages, written on two pages on State of South Carolina letterhead; creases where folded. Columbia, 17 June, 1870

  • Notes: Francis Louis Cardozo (1837-1903), minister, educator and politician was born to a free black woman and a Jewish father, quite possibly Jacob Cardozo, editor of an anti-nullification newspaper in Charleston. Cardozo was very active in the area education and later in Reconstruction politics. He was elected Secretary of State in 1868, having declined the offer of the Lieutenant-governorship. Later, in charge of the treasury, he was implicated in a scandal involving the allocation of funds. He resigned in 1876, but was indicted and found guilty of fraud in 1877. He was pardoned by Governor Wade Hampton before serving a day of his sentence.
