PRINTS THE 13TH AMENDMENT (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--RECONSTRUCTION.) The National Freedman, a Monthly Journal of the New York National Freedman's Relief Association. Volume I, No. 11. 38 pages [346-384 pp]. Small 4to, original sewn self-wrappers. Faint crease where folded to be mailed, otherwise a pristine copy. New York, 1865

  • Notes: a rare periodical printing the thirteenth amendment "abolition of slavery, december 18, 1865" on the front page. In addition to the 13th Amendment, there are numerous articles and anecdotal pieces reflecting on how this has affected people around the country and abroad. The most interesting is Laura S. Haviland's story of "An assault on Sojourner Truth," relating how an attempt was made by a conductor to throw the venerable abolitionist off a Washington street-car. Sojourner Truth's shoulder was injured in the incident and a charge of assault was made against the conductor. The case went to the Grand Jury in Washington, where it was won by the plaintiff. As a result the street-cars in Washington were desegregated. We could find no other copies of this publication.
