(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--RELIGION.) CHAMBLISS, A. W. The Catechetical Instructor. In which The Leading Doctrines and Practices of Christianity are Familiarly Exhibited . . . Especially for the Oral Instruction of the Colored Population. 12mo, original printed paper-covered boards, neatly re-backed with black cloth, stamped in gilt; pages toned with a "tide-line" running through the bottom right margin. Montgomery, ALA: Bates, Hooper & Co, 1847

  • Notes: first edition of this famous catechism. Only this edition was used for the religious instruction of slaves. While OCLC locates 12 copies of this work, all but two are in Southern libraries, with none in the East. Chambliss served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Prattville, Alabama from1840 to 1842, where he advocated the oral instruction of slaves. This practice was apparently accepted by many of the inhabitants of Montgomery and other counties. The nearby Old Harmony Baptist Church in Autoga County had a mixed congregation that included slaves in the 1840s.
