  • Notes: first edition of a scarce narrative by mary todd lincoln's personal modiste and confidante. Elezabeth Keckley (1818-1907), a former slave was an extraordinarily shrewd businesswomen. At one time she was a dressmaker to Vina Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis, and counted many of Washington's female elite among her clients. Among other things revealed in this memoir is the story of how Keckley and Mrs. Lincoln (under an alias) traveled to New York secretly in 1867 in order to dispose of some of the first lady's personal items to cover some serious debts as a result of extravagant spending.
