(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) SOUTH SEA COMPANY. Manuscript Document Signed by the sub-governor of the South Sea Company.

EARLY SOUTH SEA COMPANY DOCUMENT (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) SOUTH SEA COMPANY. Manuscript Document Signed by the sub-governor of the South Sea Company. Single folio sheet, written on one side; several chips to the corners, one obliterating a few words, however understandable in context. [London,] South Sea House, 1731

  • Notes: a letter of exceptional content regarding the assiento and the taxes on slaves brought into or exported from jamaica. The Assiento of 1713, an agreement between Spain and Great Britain, gave Spain a virtual monopoly on the African slave trade. Under this treaty, the British promised to provide 144,000 African slaves over a period of thirty years. The British far exceeded this figure, having to supply their own plantations in Jamaica etc.
The authors of the present letter, John Eyles, the Sub-Governor of the South Sea Company and Jonathan Hanbury, ask the Lords of Trade not to raise taxes on slaves. The Lords of Trade were considering placing duties on slaves imported from Africa at 15 shillings each, and slaves exported from Jamaica at 30 shillings.
