(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) [THOMAS JEFFERSON] PARRISH, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed to William Jones. Long folio leaf, written on one side only folded to form integral envelope, free franked. Philadelphia January 25, 1802

  • Notes: An intriguing letter from one congressman to another, having met while traveling. John Parrish writes to William Jones about a fugitive slave bill under consideration (probably a refinement of the fugitive bill of 1793). "From the short acquaintance I had with thee on the way to Baltimore, and thy being a Representative from this state, I have the freedom of requesting thee to send me one of those papers that contain the names of the members and the yeas and nays respecting the proposed fugitive bill . . . and as Congress has repeatedly refused to do anything in the favour of the oppressed Blacks I was glad to find there was a majority in the House against the increase." He refers to Jefferson, whose nickname was the "Seal." "I believe it will appear when the matter comes to be weighed in a fare (sic) balance the Seale will turn the other way, and as a slave holder candidly acknowledge if he was to give continued fare play he could not do it."
