(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) To Be Sold.

RARE ABOLITIONIST PIECE SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) To Be Sold. Small bronze paperweight in the shape of a kneeling slave, his hands bound behind him; around his neck is a sign, "To be Sold." 2-3/4 inches high, mounted on a piece of black marble. [England?], 1800-1835

  • Notes: Depicts a kneeling slave, bound in the manner employed by African slave traders; his arms stretched behind his back attached to a long piece of wood. One of the most striking anti-slavery pieces we have ever handled in 17 years of writing this catalogue. While there is no signature or other attribution, the style is more suggestive of English workmanship than American.
