  • Notes: A very detailed manuscript description of two escaped slaves meant to be printed in the Washington Globe: "Ran away from the subscriber's farm on Brook haven, in Loudon County, Virginia on the night of the 21st instant. Two Negro men, called Charles Cook and Joe Cook: Charles is of a black complexion about 6 feet high-well formed and likely and about 22 or 23 years of age. Joe, brother of Charles is of rather light complexion about the same form and height ---of good appearance, but has a catch in his walk and is supposed to be 25 or 26 years old. Fifty dollars reward will be given for each if taken in Maryland or one hundred dollars for each, if taken and secured beyond the limits of Maryland, all reasonable expenses paid if brought back home." The author of this adds that the men were seen in company with three other runaways passing through Gettyburg. Signed by J. L. McKenna.
