Washington County, [TN], 14 April 1828

  • Notes: This court petition was issued on behalf of a woman who was held in slavery beyond the date on which her emancipation was supposed to take place. The case took place in Washington County near the eastern tip of Tennessee: "Some time in the year 1797 a yellow girl named Maria was born the property of D. Deaderick dec''d of whose last will and testament David A. Deaderick is the sole acting executor." He sold "the services of the said girl until she should arrive at the age of 30 years, when . . . the girl was to be made free. The time for which said girl was to serve has already expired." To help sway the court, the petition explained that Maria is "industrious and orderly, is married to a free man of colour with whom she now lives, who also has a reputation for industry and orderly deportment." It''s unclear how the petitioner James Anderson was involved in this case, but his intervention was successful. On the back is the resolution: "April Session, 1828. Ordered by court that the within petition be granted according to act of Assembly, William V. Chute, Chairman."
