(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) BACON, BENJAMIN C. Statistics of the Colored People of Philadelphia.

THE RARE FOURTH STUDY (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) BACON, BENJAMIN C. Statistics of the Colored People of Philadelphia. 24 pages.8vo, bound in modern marbled paper-covered boards with morocco label up the spine; small numerical stamp to title-page. Philadelphia: Re-printed by order of the Board of Education, 1859

  • Notes: A rare "fourth study," being the second printing of the 1856 study, adding 8 pages of statistics, beginning where the 1856 edition leaves off at page 16. Page 17 of the present work begins: "The following letter from that indefatigable friend of humanity, Wm. J. Mullen is so encouraging to the friends of the colored man that it, together with the additional information obtained from him, is here appended." The information that follows deals with the statistics and condition of colored prisoners (male and female) in Philadelphia's jails, together with charts on the criminals, and the crimes that they committed. Mullen provides page after page of statistical information covering the years 1835 to 1858, inclusive. He also provides some comparative charts of the percentages of the same crimes as committed by whites versus colored, showing a total reversal of today's sad figures: Whites, for example in the year 1854 committed 77.05 % of the crimes to 22.95 % for colored. A rare and important addition to the previous three studies. Not cited by the Library Company's Negro History 1553-1903, nor Blockson Collection; Afro-Americana, #751.
