EXCEPTIONAL SLAVE SALE BROADSIDE (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) BEARD, J. A. AUCTIONEER. 56 Very Choice Cotton Plantation Slaves. Mechanics, Seamstresses, Cooks, &c. Letterpress broadside, 13 3/4x8 3/8 inches; creases where folded; a couple of short ( 1/8 inch) tears at the folds; two small holes at the top corners, where possibly pinned; paper evenly toned. [New Orleans], 1855

  • Notes: J. A. Beard ran auctions of slaves on an almost monthly basis through the mid-1850s. The present sale is unusual because of the number of slaves offered as family units. The auctioneer extols such individuals such as "Big Jim, a rough carpenter, a superior field hand and cotton picker, aged about 25 or 26 years--invaluable; George, aged about 26 years, plain but useful plantation smith, a fine driver and one of the best pickers and field hands in the State, without exception . . . Little Fanny . . . Rhoderick Dhu, her child aged about four years. This man and wife can pick more cotton than any two hands in the State."
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
