(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) BEECHER, REVEREND EDWARD. Narrative of the Riots at Alton: In Connection with the Death of Elijah P. Lovejoy. 159 pages. 12mo, original patterned cloth with printed spine label; some spotting to the covers and faint old damp-stain to the text. Alton: Published by George Holton, 1838

  • Notes: first edition of this narrative of the destruction of Elijah Lovejoy's press and his death at the hands of a mob, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe's brother. Elijah P. Lovejoy (1802-1837) Presbyterian minister and abolitionist newspaper publisher ran a small press in Alton, Illinois. The press offices had been attacked and vandalized numerous times. But on November 7, 1837 a mob gathered at the warehouse in Alton where Lovejoy had then hidden his printing press. The mob set fire to the building and eventually shots were fired. Lovejoy perished in the melee and became a martyr to the cause of abolition. Numerous pamphlets and newspaper articles were written about the incident, but the present work remains the most authentic and best.
