(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Certificate of freedom issued in New York.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Certificate of freedom issued in New York. Partly printed document, completed in manuscript and signed twice by Judge Peter McCarter. One page, 11 3/4 x 7 1/2, with docketing on verso; minor dampstaining, mount remnants on verso, separations and tape repairs on verso to folds. New York, 30 September 1814

  • Notes: This certificate was issued to Thomas Chambers, described as "a black man . . . about the age of twenty nine years, and was born at Chestertown in Maryland . . . about five feet seven inches, has dark eyes and black hair." In this two-part document, Henry Smith testifies that he has known Chambers for three years, and that during that time Chambers "hath been reputed and considered to be free, and hath continually acted as a free man during the said time," signing with a mark. Below, judge and alderman Peter McCarter certifies "I am of the opinion, and do adjudge that the said Thomas is free according to the laws of this State."
